Reverse osmosis process is a process of desalination of water, to make water safe for drinking. It is done by removing the impurities present in the water. It is a treatment for the removal of active and inactive organic contents present in water.

Reverse osmosis treatment is a process for production of fresh, low- salinity potable water from saline water source through separation membrane. At first, the unit of mineral and salt content present in water is measured by the water quality parameter named total dissolved solids (TDS). The concentration of mineral or salt content present in water is measured in milligrams per liter (mg/l) or parts per thousand (ppt). United States and world health organization, under the Safe Drinking Water Act have stated the maximum TDS concentration of 500mg/l as potable water safe for drinking. The TDS concentration is used as a classification limit for potable water.

TDS concentration more than 500mg/l or less than 15000mg/l is considered as brackish water unsafe for drinking.  Sources such as sea, bay and ocean waters have TDS concentration higher than 15,000 mg/l are generally considered as sea waters.

Reverse osmosis system is a very effective water treatment process for treating brackish, surface and ground water for both large and small flows applications. Reverse osmosis system is widely used in pharmaceutical, boiler feed water, food and beverage, and many more.
